Living Beyond Yourself

Psychologist, Joseph Kreisler, said, “If you wish to be miserable, think about yourself and what you want, what you like, what attention other people ought to pay you, and then you will find nothing will satisfy you. You will spoil everything you touch, and finally, you will make pain and misery out of everything God sent you.”
It all depends on the focal point of your life and your world. It depends on whether the axis of your existence is you and your needs, or others and how you may serve them. Yes, I fully understand that a sick person cannot serve other people very well, but nothing really is smaller than the world that revolves around self and pleasure. John D. Rockefeller discovered that.
The baron and father of the Rockefeller clan amassed a vast fortune, yet he was far from being a happy man. His health deteriorated as he fed his ulcers crackers and milk and sat like a king crab on his little empire. Realizing that death was staring him in the face and knowing that when he was gone his employees–to say nothing of his enemies–would rejoice and be quite glad, something happened to that man that totally changed his life.
He never talked about it a great deal, but it was at that point in his life that he put most of his money in a foundation and wisely determined to give it away. He began to live by giving instead of grabbing, and when he did that he became a new person. Instead of dying, his body began to heal itself. This is precisely what Jesus taught when He said, “Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it” (Luke 17:33).
This is not to suggest for a moment that being a “generous hearted soul” is your passport to heaven, but it is to say very clearly that to live exclusively for self and personal satisfaction is the certain ticket to misery and loneliness.
The peace that satisfies the heart and floods the inner recesses of the human soul is the kind that can come only from heaven’s throne. It is not the result of pills or therapy. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).
It was a Scottish preacher by the name of Peter Marshall, who became chaplain of the United States Senate, who wrote, “Father, I know now, if I never knew it before, that only in Thee can my restless human heart find peace. For I began without knowledge, but full of needs. And the turmoil of my mind, the dissatisfaction of my life all stem from trying to meet those needs with the wrong things and in the wrong places. Help me to so live that my conscience shall not have to accuse, so that I may be saved the necessity of trying to mend that which need never be broken. I know that only then will the civil war within me cease. May I be willing to have Thee with me in play as well as in work, knowing that with Thee I shall have peace and joy and no regrets. Through Jesus Christ, my Lord.”
If you sense a spiritual emptiness in your life and you are not sure how to cope with it, turn to the Lord as the Great Shepherd. Read the Gospel of John and discover the peace that God wants you to have.
