“Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, O king.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” Daniel 3:24-25

Have you ever wondered why you are too tired to do your housework, yet you have the energy to try on 10 or 12 different dresses in a half-dozen different stores strung from one end of the shopping complex other? Ever wonder why you were too tired to do any work on the house, yet you had enough energy to play 18 holes of golf without being noticeably tired at all? I’m serious. Strange isn’t it?

Dr. Harry Johnson, an M.D., has written, “Today’s civilization, the most advanced in history, with the highest standard of living ever known, has produced a generation of bored, apathetic people.” Some of us are tired because of the work we have done, but the vast majority of us are tired emotionally. We are burned-out on life.

The world-renowned Mayo clinic did a study of 235 patients who complained they were tired all of the time. Of the 235, less than 15% had any physical reason for a drain on their energy. Doctors are in quite general agreement that much of our tiredness stems from emotional tension. Psychiatrist Dr. A. Dixon Weatherhead, says, “Some say it is all in our head, and they are almost right, for most of it is.” Dr. Weatherhead is not saying that our tiredness is imaginary there is no denying the fact that a person is physically tired. What he is saying is that our tiredness is caused by our being bored with the conditions of our lives.

A life that is full of stress, or emotional battles produces a very real drain on your energy level the end result is that you are dog tired and probably haven’t accomplished a thing. Other times we are tired no less than bored, because we do not feel challenged. The same old routine gets monotonous. The same thing day after day gives us nothing to look forward to.

What can you do to buck the boring routine? Change your daily routine? Plan your days so that you can look forward to the evening? Take an interest in other people? These will all help, but I suggest that you go a step further. Commit each day to the Lord. Realize that God has a will for your life, and that will is often revealed only one day at a time. Consider every day as a new and thrilling opportunity to do something that will last for eternity. Take seriously what God has said about your life in His Word, the Bible. Read it, and then ask yourself, “How does this affect my life, and the people with whom I work? What is God trying to tell me?

When your life is overstuffed, it is no wonder that you get tired and bored. It is easy to see why you are tired, why you feel like burning your birth certificate and resigning from the human race. We’ve missed what it really takes to make life worth living. Our lives, at best, are filled with too much stuff, too little God. Boredom can only follow.

When you have a few moments, sit down and read the biographies of the first Christians. The book of Acts records them in your New Testament. Life was never dull to them. Persecutions, difficulties, trials and perplexities, yes, but not boredom.

A closing thought. The answer is not adding God as an appendage to your already over-burdened schedule. What you need is a complete reorientation of your life and your thinking, not simply an adjustment. This includes your priorities, your thinking, and your faith. Life still is worth living; it’s still worth the bother when God becomes your North Star and His Son becomes your friend and pilot. This makes the difference.
